Sente 6.1 Beta, Round 1

| 2 Comments | No TrackBacks
We are ready to begin beta testing on Sente 6.1 with improved attachment handling and other enhancements.  Because of the extent of the changes, we want to ease into the beta testing by releasing it only to experienced Sente users who are currently filing attachments inside their library bundle.

If you file your attachments inside the library bundle and are willing to test the new release, please use our support system to send us your email address.  We will send release notes and instructions to you.

I am a relatively new Sente user, but one thing I would love to see is a more sensible file structure for the pdf attachments. I have been a Papers user and one of the things I love about that software is how it handles pdfs in the file structure. Here is what I mean:

In Papers the file structure for a pdf looks like:

My Documents/Papers/2004/Abd-El-Khalick/Abd-El-Khalick Science Education 2004.pdf

In Sente the file structure for the same pdf looks like:

My Documents/McDonald Master Library/Contents/Attachments/64/64DC5041-6EDF-4881-B904-41938AC52F14/4978F5FF-E71E-4D72-AB6B-8BB31A597AD3 ((File reference)).pdf

Papers even renamed the pdf using the bibliographic information, which at import was named fulltext.pdf. What this means is that I can find pdfs easily and sensibly in the file structure and share them to others without lots of renaming and searching.

It seems like a little thing, but it is often the little things that really matter. I would happily leave all my attachments in the library bundle if the file structure allowed me to find them in a simple way.

Thanks for building such a wonderful product and I look forward to version 6.1.

Hello,

I'm a user, like you. I have both Papers and Sente - both are outstanding programs. Prior to Sente 6, PDF attachments were stored in a folder, much like Papers. The user had the option to set up the folder structure as well as renaming the file - again, much like Papers.

Sente 6 included options to synchronize the library. To do this, I believe the developer looked at setting up a unique naming convention, such that there wouldn't be problems with duplicates when synchronizing. This is what you are describing above. The 6.1 version being beta tested now (I'm still hoping to get to review it), will have the ability to move the files outside of Sente once again. You may want to check the preferences, selecting the attachments tab.

I like some of the features of Papers (sorting by Author and Journal, merging Authors and Journals, etc). Papers also has an iPhone app, which is interesting (although useless for reading articles on the small screen). However, Papers does not have the tools I need to cite like Sente does. This is very important to me as I write papers. Also, I find the web capabilities, where I can download the metadata into Sente easier to use than Papers (I open my school browser in Sente, go to their library, and download away).

Sente 6 is the first tool I open when I'm doing research. The developers are always listening to users and making improvements.

Regards,
Neil
